Most instruments have a focusing mechanism to allow movement of the shaft in which the eyepiece is mounted, without needing to manipulate the eyepiece directly. The image can be focused by moving the eyepiece nearer and further from the objective. ![]() The barrel is shaped to fit in a special opening of the instrument to which it is attached. An eyepiece consists of several “lens elements” in a housing, with a “barrel” on one end. This is one of the most recognizable parts of a compound microscope. It has a lens with a power of magnification of about 10X. The eyepiece is the part where you will look through so that you can see the magnified image. The compound microscope is an optical instrument for forming magnified images of small objects, consisting of an eyepiece. A compound microscope consists of structural components, a base, body and arm, which house and support the optical components, and the optical components themselves, an eyepiece lens and an objective lens. ![]() ![]() Compound microscopes have assisted in the discovery of the cell, the understanding of cell division, the study of bacteria and the study of molecules. They are routinely used in hospitals for diagnosis and research, and are common at police analysis labs. Microscopes are probably used most often in biological and chemistry related fields.
